In order to avoid the problems inherent in data reconstruction and back projection in the field of image tomography, a technique for segmentation of the raw projection data set has been developed with the aim of providing quantitative parameters. The algorithm has been implemented on a Sun workstation for use with Nuclear Diagnostics software and is capable of determining volume, activity and chronological changes in nuclear medicine single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) data without any reconstruction. Refinement and validation of the method are currently being undertaken.
