This paper presents the geotechnical context of the Styx Bridge project, which involves the construction of a new 220m long two lane bridge in Christchurch. The project is being undertaken for Transit New Zealand, the roading authority in New Zealand. The paper discusses the bridge foundation options and presents a comparison between current New Zealand and international methods of calculating the ultimate bearing capacities of bored piles, in view of a full-scale static load test of a pile on the site. We concluded that different methods give a wide variation in theoretical pile capacity and practitioners may need to consider a combination of a full-scale pile test in conjunction with several methods of estimating bored pile capacity.
