In the last 15 years, the largest available capacity for a newcalciner has significantly increased from 1500 tons per day (tpd)to over 3500 tpd. Large calciners with capacities of 3500 tpd andmore are being selected to both increase total refinery output andalso to replace rotary kiln capacity. Factors that influence thedecision to install these larger size calciners include reducedinvestment cost, operating costs and plant footprint per tonne ofcapacity. On the other hand, unforeseen downtime, particularlyfor large calciners can significantly jeopardize these anticipatedsavings and result in completely different economic outcomes:operating cost overruns and lost production. Parameters such asavailability, operating factor, in relation to calciner capacity areidentified. Operating data and the impact on production cost ofunforeseen downtime based on existing calcination units arepresented. Measures in areas such as design, construction, control,operation and maintenance are described to avoid unforeseendowntime during operation of the calcination facility
