The assimilation kinetics of Mn-Al cylindrical powder compacts in liquid Mg alloys was examined. In this study four parameters were measured simultaneously during the assimilation process. The first of these parameters corresponds to the temperature of the Mg bath. The second measures the edge temperature of the cylindrical compact. The third deals with the centerline of the cylindrical compact. The fourth parameter detects the net downward force of the compact. For the first three parameters thermocouples were used, whereas for the fourth parameter a load cell was employed. The thermocouples used to measure the edge and centerline temperatures were located at an equal distance from the bottom of the cylinder. Exothermic reactions were observed in the cylindrical compact. In tandem with these exothermic reactions compact swelling was observed, which was followed by the complete disintegration of the compact into the Mg bath. Differential thermal analysis was also carried out, indicating that the exothermic reaction had started after the aluminum had melted.
