Calcium silicates (CS)-based materials are largely used in many applications where increasing temperature, thermal shocks (as for example in molten metals) are present and insulation properties for continuous exposure to temperature are required. A number of calcium silicates hydrates or anhydrous forms are known with different chemical compositions, crystal organization and morphologies. Not many are of industrial interest, and even fewer display high performance under above-mentioned conditions. The chemistry and the type of calcium silicates can be controlled by different industrial processes, while the texture of the manufactured finished products is generally expressed in density, porosity and pore size distribution, mechanical performance from compression strength to modulus of rupture, elasticity modulus, energy of rupture, etc. Promat has four production plants where different technologies are used for the manufacturing of calcium silicate products. These are more or less known technologies, but their combined use and the fundamentals applied to crystallization control are proprietary knowledge. The Mineral Engineering and Matrix Engineering approach was developed around these technologies allowing the production of specially designed matrixes for best performance products related to the application.
