The microstructure of aluminum hydroxide and alumina was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The differences between alumina from seeded precipitation and carbonization precipitation were compared. Several methods were developed to view the internal microstructures of alumina. The microstructure of alumina is similar to that of aluminum hydroxide, while there are some cracks on the surface of alumina. The small crystals making up the alumina particles from seeded and carbonization precipitation are long hexagonal prism and short hexagonal prism respectively. The growth mechanism of aluminum hydroxide can be deduced from the internal structure of the alumina.
