Electronic books: requirements for displays and storage

Electronic books (e - books) are portable reading appliances that display and store text electronically in contrast to paper - based books. Text is rendered on a flat-panel LCD screen and the content is down - loaded and stored in semiconductor memory. Next generation electronic books will require color displays with low power dissipation, and the ability to store large amounts of data, necessitating the need for optical disc storage. For example, display requirements will have to exceed 177 dpi to fuller render images observed in conventional paper-based format. This paper examines the current trends in displays for small electronic books and personal digital assistants. The trends for writable optical media will also be discussed; in particular, we will examine physical defects observed on DVD and DVD-RAM media, and their impact for high, areal density storage.
