The issue of technological reliability concerning the safety of systems becomes increasingly important in the development of modem, light, passive or active structural systems. Particularly the use of active measures for noise reduction in defense technological systems require a high amount of reliability, since a failure of a subsystem can endanger or even cause a breakdown of the entire system. The term "reliability" in this context refers to the probability that a system will not fail until after a defined period of time in operation. The reliability along with the expected maximal time in operation for a required safety standard can be determined by a system reliability analysis. For this reason, the significance of reliability for active noise reducing systems in defense technology will be demonstrated and evaluated by various examples. The service life and the failure probability of each system component depend most importantly on the specific boundary condition such as temperature and moisture content. Even the term "failure" must be redefined in view of the active noise reduction procedures for defense technological systems, since they closely link electronic and mechanical components. System reliability analysis, particularly for active noise reducing structure systems considering specific defense technological concerns, offers the possibility to quantify failure probability.
