The major objective of this study is to present the stability analysis and the decentralized system design of large space structures such as space solar power systems. The stability analysis is carried out about the position, attitude and structural changes based on the potential field. This study focuses on the km-order solar-array platform with gravity gradient stabilization. Because its size is very large, the solar-array is very flexible. In addition to it, the structural deformation has an effect on the attitude change. Therefore, comprehensive analysis of the system motions including position, attitude, and structural changes is required. Through the same physical property, which is the potential energy, three different motions (position, attitude, and structural changes) can be evaluated in integrated way. Furthermore, the large space structure needs to be decomposed into small modules for the high reliability and easy construction. In modularized structures, a centralized system including control is not generally effective, and a decentralized system can extend various possibilities of the structure. Therefore, the design of the decentralized system can be considered as shaping the form of each module's potential energy. In this study, the concept of decentralized system design based on the local potential energy is also discussed from results of the stability analysis.
