The performance of a hybrid damping system, which combined lead hysteresis dampers and viscous dampers, was investigated and examined the optimum positions to install the dampers by analyzing the lumped mass models and two-dimensional member models of a high-rise building. The following results were obtained: 1. The hybrid damping system reduces the response of a building for approximately 20% compared to buildings with no dampers regardless of the input level or the periodical characteristics of seismic waves. The hybrid system controls both the energy that is input to frames and vibration energy in good balances. 2. When dampers are installed along the periphery of the frames, the fluctuating axial forces of boundary columns affect the reduction of the damping performance. 3. To reduce the response of a building, of the cases analyzed in this study, it is more effective to install lead hysteresis dampers at the higher stories, which show large story deformation, and viscous dampers at the lower stories, which show small deformation, than mixing the two kinds of dampers. Therefore, installation of dampers appropriate to relative story displacement should be effective to control the vibration of buildings.
