Models for damage accumulation in wood

It can be concluded from the results presented in this note that lifetime of wood subjected to variable loads is considerably overestimated by method II (Gerhard's damage model). The main reason for this is that damages predicted by method II only consider load levels. Damages caused by changing load levels are ignored, which makes lifetime predictions independent of load frequency. Further disadvanges in using method II for lifetime predictions are that wood quality and climatic conditions cannot be considered and that residual strength cannot be predicted.
