Experimental Activities at the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (EERC), University of Bristol, UK

Since 1990 the European Commission has supported many activities in earthquake engineering, one of which has been the development of Large Scale Facilities (LSF) such as shaking tables and reaction walls. A principal objective was to produce common standards and procedures so that a coherent European programme of research could be carried out. One result of these studies was to implement on our LSF new developments in control, producing major advances and effectively giving real-time control, as well as greatly improved accuracy. This has brought European LSF up to, and possibly beyond, current international standards. These advances in the control of shaking tables have opened up several new areas of research, the early stages of which will be described.
