A new strategy to construc rigid and dendritic complexes with octahedral metal center has been developed and its validity has been demonstrated by the synthesis of cationic complexes with six, twleve, and eighteen peripheral Ru(II)-terpyridine units (Fig. 1). The largest cationic compound prepared in this fasion has an estimated diameter of 9 nm with 38 positive charages and 1435 atoms. Preliminary photophysical data suggested that Ni(II) in the center of the dendrimer quenches ~3MLCT state of the peripheral polypridine-Ru units.
