Gold nanoparticles protected with alkanethiolate monolayers provide a unique platform for the construction of functional nanoscopic system.s The attachment of redox-/photo-active molecular devices produces nanoscale electronics, chemical and biosensors, drug delivery systems, and catalysis. Here, we have been developing redox-/photoresponsive gold nanoparticles designed to selectively recognize and sense biologically important guest species.
