Estimating Methane Mitigation in the USA and Internationally Beyond 2020

In 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published data for USA marginal abatement curves for methane. This detailed portrayal of abatement options led to the inclusion of methane abatement options in several partial and general equilibrium modeling efforts. Out to 2020, these curves provided sufficient information for economic and policy analysis of climate policies. As the analytical time frame stretches out to 2100, extensions of current analyses to incorporate technical change and higher carbon prices are essential. This paper reviews current efforts and recommends continued work to improve methane mitigation analysis beyond 2020.
