Renewal of historic public buildings is necessary to ensure continuation of our cultural heritage and the functioning of the infrastructure. Frequently a renewal strategy requires addressing the threat of seismic damage. Controlling earthquake-induced behavior of buildings with seismic energy dissipation devices is the most positive means of ensuring favorable building performance. Several important historic public buildings in California have been retrofitted with special seismic energy dissipation systems and with seismic isolation devices to achieve superior and cost-effective seismic response. The 18-story Pacific Gas and Electric Historic Buildings housing the Northern California utility company and the Historic State Supreme Court, both in San Francisco, have been upgraded with special concrete shear wall systems. Installation of seismic isolators under both San Francisco City Hall and Oakland City Hall has been completed and is presented.
