The description of liquid-phase adsorption equilibria onto activated carbons was investigated in terms of group contributions. The adsorbate-solid solution theory was used in order to introduce the active sites of the adsorbent as a component in a multicomponent mixture with the liquids. The active sites and the liquids are subdivided into functional groups and the corresponding group contribution parameters were fitted to experimental data. By using these parameters predictions of liquid-phase adsorption equilibria of different systems, especially with other activated carbons, are possible.
