Carbon-containing refractories have progressed remarkably as refractories for steelmaking furnace owing to good resistance to slag corrosion and thermal schock. The refractories comprise oxide, graphite and antioxidant, and these compositions are bonded by binder such as phenolic resin. The antioxidants such as metal, alloy, carbide, etc. not only suppresses oxidation of carbon, but also exerts other several effects for improvement of the refractories. In this paper, effect and behavior of the antioxidant are described, and the new direction of the refractories are discussed.
