Preliminary Discussion on Large-Scale Water Conservancy in Ancient Liangzhu City Area, Yangtze Delta of China: Highlight of Early Agricultural Civilization

INTRODUCTION The present study is to examine the geoarchae-ological evolution in Liangzhu-Pingyao region of the Yangtze Delta plain, eastern China. Three major prehistoric cultures occur in the Yangtze Delta, i.e., Majiabang (7 000-6 000 aBP), Songze (6 000-5 200 aBP), and Liangzhu (5 200-4 000 aBP), which are followed by historical Xia-Shang-Zhou (4 000-2 800 aBP) and Spring-Autumn Period (2 800-2 200 aBP) (Chang, 1986). The previous study reported the rice cultivation that prevailed during Liangzhu stage (CPAM, 1984). The ancient Liangzhu City of the study area, covering about 3 km2, emerged with the early agricultural civilization.
