The discovery that cholesteryl benzoate gives rise, in addition to the crystalline and the isotropic states, to a third, intermediate state, which was since then referred to as liquid crystalline (LC). was made about a hundred years ago. More recently, the concept of liquid crystallinity has been extended to the realm of high molar mass materials. Today, a considerable number of LC polymers (LCPs), i.e., polymers displaying LC behavior either in solution or in the melt, are known. Besides their obvious scientific interest, these materials are very attractive on a commercial ground.
