The author and his group have developed numerous computational methods and experimental measurements for fracture studies, especially for dynamic fracture studies. In the first part of this paper, the concepts of the hybrid experimental-numerical methods are explained. On the basis of these concepts, various hybrid experimental-numerical methods used in dynamic fracture mechanics are classified. The key technologies developed by the authors for the studies of dynamic fracture are ultrahigh-speed photography to visualize various dynamic fracture phenomena and various moving finite element methods together with the path independent dynamic J integral. In the last part, features of the hybrid methods are presented with pertinent results obtained by our recent studies.
