The Laval University Road Experimental Site (SERUL) is a full size road laboratory designed to simulate operating conditions of regional roads and resource access roads in cold climates. Funded by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, by the Quebec government and by 10 partners from public and private sectors, the site will be constructed in summer 1999 on Laval University properties, 60 km north of Quebec City. The SERUL will include a 1 km experimental road section constructed in parallel to the existing route 33 which is the main forest harvesting road of the area. It will be divided in two test sections of approximately 300 m each. The first one will be used for research on surfacing techniques and materials and on maintenance and rehabilitation techniques for road surfaces. The second section will be dedicated to research on pavement structures and on their mechanical and thermodynamic behavior. Part of the road in that section will be constructed in a test pit, which will be partly covered to control some of the climatic factors.
