Conventional embedment of foundations for a nitrogen tank and reactor feed silos at a manufacturing facility would require excavation and disposal of contaminated soil. Surface foundation systems utilizing reinforced concrete mats and rigid styrofoam insulation to prevent freezing of the bearing soils were designed and constructed to minimize the depth of foundation embedment and the need to excavate the contaminated soil.
