An hybrid modeling method has been successfully developed to simulate the multiphase flow field during automotive fuel tank filling. The hybrid technique consists of a lumped parameter model to simulate the storage tank and a three-dimensional model to simulate the complex two-phase flow in the filler pipe and cap. In addition, a one-dimensional compressible flow model is used to simulate the flow in the vent tubes and the valves. Dynamic two-way couplings are used between the models. A complete fuel tank system is considered in the simulation. The flow patterns in the filler pipe and cap are well predicted by the simulation. Also, the tank dome pressure obtained from the simulation, the key flow variable influencing the flow behavior in the filler pipe and cap, is in a good agreement with that from the experiment. The hybrid modeling method can be used to predict the PSO.
