Hydrophobic microporous hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) are the fundamental components of extracorporeal membrane gas exchange devices used clinically during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures. Microporous walled HFMs provide high delivery rates of oxygen and carbon dixoide through essentially gas-filled pores. However, chronic use of mcroporous membrane oxygenators is limited by the occruence of plasma leakage, or "weeping", through the pores resulting in device failure. Coating of fibers with an ultatin nonporous polymer layer is though to prevent plasma leakage, but at the expense of reduced HFM permeability.
