Desired membrane features for the Year 2000: industrial uses' perspective

A majority of the process separation steps in food and biotech industries involve filtration and concentration. The process streams are primarily aqueous streams, and the process steps separate on or more components from an intricate mixture. Components to be separated range from particulates to small molecules. At the present time, membranes are being used for filtration and concentration. For food and biotech industries membrane processing minimizes waste generation, offers energy savings and does not reqjire any application of heat or phase change for concentration of streams.
