Identification and location of abandoned natural gas wells can be a laborious and expensive undertaking especially in older well fields were more detailed records may be lacking. Use of geophysical survey techniques can significantly reduce the scope and cost of investigatory activities. This paper presents a case study in the successful application of geophysical survey techniques to locate a natural gas well that was abandoned in the late 1930's. Results form the terrain conductivity surveys demonstrated their utility by limiting the area over which intrusive investigatory activities were required and successfully locating the abandoned natural gas well.
