Looking ahead: environmental policy in the years to come

We are entering into a new era of environmental policy where the rules are changing, as are the players. In this article I will explore emerging trends in this policy area and where I think they are heading. No responsible forecast can ignore the present, and so I will begin by assessing recent events in the environmental area and then move to their future implications. Accordingly, I will look at three areas: a new set of players emerging and how they will affect the dialogue, new models of decisionmaking recently developed and under development, and several new issues and approaches that I believe will have a major impact over the coming years.
