The increasingly complex nature of machinery in present day industrial environments demands new and sophisticated maintenance practices that evolve with application requirements. Capital expenditures on equipment and fluids have put pressure on OEMs and plant operators to increase the longevity and reliability of hardware components and extend fluid service life. This paper describes a sensor array for monitoring properties of interest on a pulper lubricating system at a major industrial facility in Quebec, Canada. The distributed system is built on a Web platform that allows for real-time trending of equipment environment and can be accessed remotely with the aim of maximizing predictive maintenance practices. The information presented in this paper should be helpful to personnel involved in predictive maintenance and condition monitoring programs at pulp and paper facilities. It may also serve as a guideline to sensor components and provide insight as to how they might be useful in instituting new programs or augmenting existing ones. Continued innovation in these fields will further increase sophistication of these endeavors and contribute further to reducing the operating and maintenance costs.
