The operation of most conceivable electronic devices using organic molecules involves electron transfer at molecule-metal interfaces. Despite its prominent role, few studies in the molecular electronics community have addressed the fundamental issues, such as energetics and dynamics, involved in interfacial electron transport. Our laboratory has recently initiated a systematic study of this issue using laser two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. We demonstrate the important roles of molecule-metal wavefunction mixing, intcrmolecular band formation, and the presence of localized interfacial states in interfacial electron transfer.
