Experimental study of cornering behavior of radial tires on a dry pavement

The influences of tire designs, such as tire construction and its type and tread pattern, on tire cornering behavior are very important for a car on dry roads. In this paper, the effects of tread patterns, tire load and pneumatic pressure on cornering properties of a tire, which are mainly referred to the relationships between lateral force and aligning moment and slip angle, were investigated on the self-developed plain type test rig for tires in low speeds. Three pieces of radial tires with the same size and the same tread compounds but different tread patterns were used. The results showed that the tires with patterned tread have better cornering behavior than that of the tire with smooth tread. The results also suggest that suitable pneumatic pressure is necessary for a tire to get lateral force and self-aligning moment large enough and decrease the heating amount during its running.
