BLAST FURNACE FREEZE UP AND RECOVERY AT ERDEMIR NO.2 BLAST FURNACE

This paper has two parts. The first part is about a frozen hearth event due to an unprepared shutdown in April 2002 at No.2 BF of Erdemir. The second part is about frozen hearth due to high rate of water leakage in the BF. Because of a steel shop breakdown, No.2 BF had to shut down for a long time in unprepared conditions. After blow in, the furnace was very chilled and also furnace operation parameters deteriorated. After several trials, it was clear that the connection between the tuyeres, and tapholes had been lost. The experience, trials, and methods during the blow in will be discussed. Heating the frozen hearth by a natural gas lance apparatus and details of this technique will be described. As a result of several burnt tuyeres, large amounts of water rushed into the No.2 blast furnace hearth in April 1999. Because of the large amount of water, one of the tuyeres burned and exploded just at the beginning of tapping time. So, the BF was shut down suddenly in an unprepared condition. All blowpipes and tuyere stacks were filled with slag. The connection between the tuyeres and the tapholes disappeared due to water leakage and long unprepared shutdown. After several trials and hard work the problem was solved. The techniques, methods, and experiences about the frozen hearth due to water leakage will be discussed.
