A landfill gas flare system represents a significant investment. Reliable operation isrnusually mandated by regulatory agencies and other site specific conditions. Lapses inrnoperation generally require extensive reporting to regulators and can also cause publicrnrelations problems. A flare system is put in place to meet specific demands and it mustrnbe operated and maintained properly!rnGiven the complexity of the components of modern landfill gas flare systems, operationrnand maintenance can no longer be relegated to inexperienced personnel at landfill sites.rn“Unattended” operation at closed landfill sites can also present a unique set of operationrnand maintenance issues due to remote locations and degrees of communication.rnThis paper will investigate the complexities of modern landfill gas flare control,rninstrumentation and communication systems and will provide a guide for the level ofrntraining and dedication needed for operations and maintenance personnel. Computerizedrninstrumentation and control systems will be discussed and the qualifications for onsiternand/or contract maintenance personnel will be identified. The needs for mechanicalrnsystems expertise will be identified, along with the operation and maintenance of thesernsubsystems.
