The presentation reviews the "weight of evidence" supporting monitored natural attenuation (MNA) at a variety of landfill sites situated in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Ten landfill case studies are presented, each with over ten years of groundwater monitoring data either supporting or refuting the viability of MNA as a remedial option. MNA was first proposed for each of the subject sites in the mid 1990s. Remedial goals were met for some sites before the MNA proposal reviews were completed, while at other sites, although concentrations and extent of impact continue to decrease, achieving remedial goals remains elusive. Also included are subject sites where the concentrations and extent of impact did not decrease as expected, requiring alternative remedial measures. The presentation examines the evidence supporting the biological, chemical and physical degradation (i.e., natural attenuation) of contaminants utilizing over ten years of data generated at these ten sites.
