Laser Shock Processing (LSP) consists in focusing a high energy pulsed laser on metals to create shock waves and generate high compressive stress fields. Compared with conventional mechanical treatments (Shot Peening), residual stress levels are quite similar, but the affected depths are greater and surfaces are nearly preserved in terms of roughness and hardening. Beneficial effects have been previously observed on static and cyclic mechanical properties, but to a very little extend on corrosion resistance.
