NOVEL USE OF A TRADITIONAL MACHINING METHOD FOR GENERATION OF LARGE SCALE MICRO-STRUCTURED SURFACES

摘要

A new method for generating a micro-structured surface on a large drum with a single point diamond tool has been characterized and tested. The fundamental idea is based upon a traditional manufacturing process from the gear making industry. This method enables grooves to be machined on large drums at any angle and within a reasonable amount of time. Of particular interest is the machining of grooves along the longitudinal axis of the drum.
