Located amongst palaces and high profilernskyscrapers on the Corniche Street of AburnDhabi in the United Arab Emirates, thernnew mixed-use $290 USD million RegentrnEmirates Pearl development rises and twistrn840 feet (256 m) above ground. Thernexpansive plot area of 120,000 sf (11,150rnsm) is located such that it provides some ofrnthe best views of the capital city, thernturquoise water of the Persian Gulf and thernluxurious Emirates Palace. The structurerntopped out in March 2012 and will open inrnearly 2014.rnThe Pearl’s signature feature is the 45–rnstory twisting elliptical floor plan andrncolumns which contains 60 luxury servicedrnapartments occupying levels 1 thru 10 andrna 5-star hotel with 437 rooms includingrnpresidential and royal suites occupyingrnlevels 11 thru Roof. (See Figure 1.) Thernexpansive podium area includes five levelsrnof restaurants, retail areas, spas, swimmingrnpools, gym and more with another 5 levelsrnof underground parking. The total projectrnbuild up area is 55 stories and 1.4 millionrnsf.rnThe tower is laterally supported by anrnelliptical core-coupled shear wall andrnvertically supported by gravity columnsrntwisting around the perimeter, oriented at 7rndegrees from vertical. The inherent torsionrnwhich is driven into the core was greatlyrnreduced by use of an innovative outriggerrntransfer design which reversed the torsion,rnmaking the building both possible andrnefficient. The use of a construction sequencernmodel was used to verify the design and tornprovide direction regarding how best tornconstruct the tower.
