Conditiong of spent fuel for interim and final storage in the pilot coditioning plant (PKA)

In 1994, due to the change of the nuclear law in Germany, the concept of direct final disposal for spent fuel was developed as an equivalent alternative to the waste management with reprocessing. Since 1979, tests for the direct final disposal of spent fuel have been condicted in Germany. In 1985, the State and the ulities came to an agreement to develop this concept of waste management to technical maturity. Gesellschaft fur Nuklear-Service (GNS) was commisssioned by the utilieiws with the following tasks: to develop and test components with regard to conditioning technology, to construct and operate the pilot conditioning plant (PKA), and to develop casks suitable for final disposal.
