Tubular restrictions from scale buildup can significantly reduce rnhydrocarbon production,subsequently reducing the production rncapacity of a well.Before-production can be restored,this rnbuildup must be removed.Although scale buildup is a global rnproblem,the material composition and characteristics of scales rncan vary drastically,even within the same field.AS a result,most rntools traditionally used for scale removal cannot efflciently rnremove scale in all well conditions.This paper discusses a rnrecently developed,customized jet cleaning tool that addresses rnthe problems inherent with scale-cleaning operations.rn Scale removal can be difflcult because many removal rnmethods cannot control jet dwell time,which is the time required rnto accomplish scale removal based on the type and hardness of rnthe scale.Because jet dwell time increases with the hardness of rnthe buildup material.Cleanng efficiency is measured by the rncapability of the scale—removal method to control dwell time.rnTraditional jet cleaning tools have not provided adequate con-rntrol.Whichhas severely impacted their operational performance.rnA new,slow-rotating jet cleaning tool helps minimize jet dwell rntime without introducing repetitive cyclic effects on a coiled rntubing(CT)workstring.rn The slow-rotating jet cleaning tool can also be used for rncutting tubulars.Previously,tubulars Could only be cut by rnmechanical,explosive,or chemical methods.CT was used either rnto deploy positive-displacement motors(PDM's)for rotating rnmechanical cutters,or to deploy pressure-activated firing de-rnvices that initiated the flring sequence in explosive or chemical rnCutters.rn This paper discusses the evolution of C7 cleaning proce-rndures,alternatives to cleaning with CT,and the design andrnapplication of the new slow-rotating jet cleaning tool.Casernhistories discuss the use of the jet cleaning tool for removing rnscale and production buildup on tubing walls.The new tool can rnbe used for performing through-tubing cuts,and Can help reduce rnservice costs for difficult applications,such as those involving rnlong bottomhole assemblies.The capacity of the new jet cleaning rntool to control jet dwell time and pump abrasive fluids helps rnreduce the risks,obstacles,and costs associated with traditional rncutting and cleaning methods.
