Understanding the sources and quantities of greenhouse gasrn(GHG) emissions is critical to developing an emissionsrninventory that accurately represents oil and natural gasrnindustry operations. In response to continued interest by itsrnmember companies about consistency in emissions estimation,rnthe American Petroleum Institute (API) developed arnCompendium of Greenhouse Gas Emissions EstimationrnMethodologies for the Oil and Gas Industry. ThernCompendium is a result of more than a year long effort by APIrnto screen, evaluate and document a range of calculationrntechniques and emission factors that could be useful forrndeveloping GHG emissions inventories.rnIn this work all oil and gas industry segments fromrnexploration and production to transportation, refining andrndistribution were considered. Particular emphasis has beenrnplaced on including estimation techniques that depend onrnknowledge of oil and gas processing simulation, along with arnranking of preferred and alternate methods.rnInitially distributed in June 2001 as a “Road-Test”rndocument, API will continue to gather comments from endrnusers and other interested parties for a one-year trial period.rnAPI has reached out to governmental, non-governmental andrnindustry associations during the development process tornensure broad peer-review. Additional opportunities will bernsought for further discussions prior to finalizing the documentrnin 2002.rnThis paper will summarize the technical approach adoptedrnfor the Compendium and introduce some of the techniques forrnestimating GHG emissions from specific oil and gas industryrnoperations. It will discuss decisions that need to be madernwhen designing a GHG emissions inventory. It will alsornpresent findings from users of the Compendium and feedbackrnfrom end-user reviews.
