Management of human factors is recognized as an essentialrnrole in the control of risk. Human factors cover a wide rangernof issues, which include the perceptual mental and physicalrncapabilities of people and the interactions of individuals withrntheir job and working environments, the influence ofrnequipment and systems design on human performance, and thernorganizational characteristics that influence safety relatedrnbehavior at work (1). At PTTEP statistics over a number ofrnyears were analyzed; the result showed that “human factors”rnwas the root cause behind most accidents.rnIn order to improve human behavior, several schemes werernintroduced all aimed at increasing HSE awareness andrnconsciousnesses of all personnel. These approaches included:rn1. HSE training improvement;rn2. Monthly HSE publication (HSE bulletin);rn3. Safety alert;rn4. HSE information board;rn5. HSE promotion campaigns such as monthly quiz,rnunsafe act / condition reporting campaign;rn? HSE exhibition week;rn? Contractor HSE forum; etc.rnIt is also a real challenge to assess the achievement of thernabove schemes. One of the assessment tools is the HSErnawareness survey. A HSE awareness questionnaire wasrncreated. It is not only to evaluate the level of health, safetyrnand environmental awareness of company personnel but alsornto provide a guideline for improving HSE promotion andrncommunication of the company, as a result.rnThe HSE awareness survey results for the past 3 yearsrnshowed that the level of HSE awareness progressivelyrnincreased when comparing the results of 1998 with 2000.rnThere was about 15% improvement. Whereas, the trend in thernnumber of recordable incidents per million man-hours isrnsteadily decreased. The 2000 results were nearly half of 1998.
