Risk-Based Assessment (RBA) of a Gas/Oil Separation Plant

Saudi Aramco operates a number of Gas/Oil Separation Plantsrn(GOSPs) to support its production objectives. Current Test andrnInspection (T & I) intervals are driven by time-based strategiesrnto ensure mechanical integrity. A Risk-Based Assessmentrnbased on inspection-orientated criteria was applied to a typicalrnGOSP as an aid to determine potential condition-basedrnstrategies, while maintaining, or improving current plantrnintegrity and availability.rnThe methodology selected for this particular study was basedrnon API Publication 581, Risk Based Inspection Base ResourcernDocument, First Edition, May 2000 and was used inrnconjunction with the supporting software tools developed byrnthe API sponsoring committee. Typical damage mechanismsrnprevalent in GOSPs were identified and assessed on the basisrnof their consequence and likelihood of failure, the outcomernbeing represented in terms of a typical five by five risk matrix.rnThis paper discusses the four phases of the project outlined as:rn1. Pre-Assessment.rn2. Data Collection.rn3. Analysis and Inspection Planning.rn4. Final Reporting and Conclusions.rnThe potential benefits and limitations of the assessment arernhighlighted.
