Under the support from NASA's MTPE (Mission To Planet Earth) Porgram and Chicago Wilderness (CW) organisations, a regional vegetation mapping and land cover change detection studies by sing remote sensing technologies has been conducted in the greater Chincago region. Some of themajor goals of the study include to produce vegetation maps of the region based on multitemporal remote sensing data, exampine the land use and land cover changes, evaluate the effetiveness of remote sensing technologies in regional biodiversity studies, and itnegrate the information drived from remote sensing data into the bioldiversity reocvery plan being developed for Chicago Wilderness. Landsat TM, NALC'S DEM, MSS and the derivative of NDVI are appleid GPS and hig spatial resolution aerial digital remote sensing data are employed for ground truthing. The classification system for terrestrial and aquatic communities adopted and adapted by Chicago Wildernes is applied to classify remote sensing images into appropriate vegetation ommunities, GIS data are integrated with remote sensing data in urban feature indentification and image analysis.
