In digital terrain modelling, if the source data (e.g. acuired by image matching) is too dense, a filtering process, e.g. the VIP (very important points) in ARC/TIN, is then applied to remove those less important data points (or select those important points) from the original data set for efficient data sotrage and process. This paper describes dome experimental tets on the effect of such a data filtering process on the accuracy of resulting digital terrain models (DTM). A mathematical model is established to predict the accuracy loss due to filtering. An experiemntal consisting of two testing areas was conducted so as to determine the parameters used in mathematical model.
