The construction and operation of a replica Lunar settlement (CELSS), can provide many lessons in in-siturnresource utilization, telerobotic operation and reducing the hygiene water demanded by existing models of Lunarrnoperation - a larger settlement may be operated with the same amount of precious water. Hypes and Hall and all otherrnCELSS models found in the literature propose quantities of hygiene water far in excess of what would be needed inrnactual operation using simple, environmentally aware technologies. By using modern zero water toilets, low waterrnshowers, CO_2 dry cleaning machines, energy efficient washing machines and other hardware, water use can be slashed.rnThe Space Solar Power Workshop sees great opportunity to advance the prospects for Lunar settlement throughrninvolving the environmental community in this fun design exercise.
