In this paper is made a comparative economic analysis concerning electrification of the rural villages either with hybrid photovoltaic (PV/backup generator, HPV) system or with power utility (PU) extension. Assuming that the HPV system's lifetime is 25 years, a break-even life cycle cost analysis is processed. In a given solar energy level (2.88 kWh/ m²day, on tilted surface, December), the daily load consumption (DLC) and the feeder length (FL) are the break-even factors deciding which alternative is more cost effective. The gauge of the cost effectiveness is the net cost of the delivered kilowatt-hour electricity. The electricity net cost from the HPV system is almost constant, about 1 €/kWh, whereas the price from the PU strongly depends on the daily energy consumption and on the feeder length. The economic assessments shows that it ranges between 0.2 €/kWh (DLC=50 kWh/day, FL=1 km) and 7.6 €/kWh (10 kWh/day, 20 km). In all cases when DLC/FL<3.4 the HPV system is more cost effective power supplying option.
