THE PROCESS OF DEFINING A SUSTAINABLE AESTHETIC

This study explores the process of developing a new aesthetic approach to architecture based on sustainability. Recognizing the gravity of the climate change situation, and impact that architecture has on greenhouse gas emissions, the authors propose a "sustainable aesthetic" as a viable solution. The paper traces the process and background that precedes the definition of a cohesive sustainable aesthetic, including the understanding of existing theory and practice, the rejection of current sustainability and design paradigms, recognition of the realities of a complex world, and the importance of learning from historical examples. In the end, the process yields three concrete factors that should shape a sustainable architectural aesthetic theory.
