SOLAR ARCHITECTURE: 20 YEARS - 3 DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS - 1 SITE

This paper will explore the development of environmental design strategies over a period of 22 years at the same northern New England site, at three distinct demonstration projects approximately 10 years apart. The same owner and architectural firm have been involved from the start. The Architects were originally commissioned in February 1979 to provide new headquarters for the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests in Concord, NH, and subsequently designed the Weeks Wing addition in 1990 and the French Wing in 2000. Goals and achievements of each project will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on the earliest and most recent efforts. The time frame affords a unique opportunity for a continuing post-occupancy review, as some of the original occupants are still on the staff. The paper is a joint effort between the architect and the owner. The architect will focus broadly on technical issues and how they influenced architectural design; the owner will present performance data and findings from post-occupancy interviews.
