LESS IS MORE LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE LOW ENERGY SUPER STORE (LESS) BY STOP SHOP

This paper describes the process, success, and the lessons learned during the design, construction, and operation of the Low Energy Super Store (LESS) by Stop & Shop in Foxboro, MA. Ahold Incorporated, the Netherlands based parent company of Stop & Shop, considers this store a landmark building using 38% less energy than the typical prototype store. It exceeds the initial goal of 30% savings and goes beyond energy to demonstrate several environmentally sensative building techniques that are applicable to supermarkets nationally and globally. The financial performance and consumer perception is being tested on the basis of actual operations. This presentation, one and half years after the opening of the store, will provide the most recent market and performance data on the store. The purpose of this report and presentation is to inform and inspire professionals of the opportunities in Big Box design and construction, and the specific details within supermarkets. Topics covered will include daylighting and energy efficient electric lighting integration, refrigeration and HVAC efficiency improvements, and green building construction methods. Finally, the successful collaboration with manufacturers, suppliers, and the local utilities will be described.
