Morgenstern (1978) wrote that while conducting slope stability analysis of first-time slides, thern“fully softened shear strength” must be utilized. Although several studies have been conducted on the peak andrnresidual shear strengths, very little information pertinent to the fully softened shear strength is available. Thernobjective of this study is to measure the fully softened and residual friction angles for different soil specimens.rnThe fully softened friction angle and index properties for 36 soil specimens composed of different mixtures ofrnmontmorillonite, kaolinite, and quartz were measured. Of these 36 samples, the residual friction angles of 19rnspecimens were measured. The results obtained were compared to the ones provided by Tiwari and Maruirn(2005) and found to be similar. Good correlations were developed to estimate the fully softened friction anglernwith the index properties such as liquid limit, plasticity index, clay fraction and activity.
